Year
What happened?
2007 Started Sat night Residency at Varsity , Loughboroughs ex Barracuda bar. I get to use a Kaleidovision VJ system as well as my own CD Decks as usual. The music is everything from pop, dance, RnB, speed garage and trance. Weekday slots to cover the popular Pound Party nights as and when needed have been done.
2004 Started Fri/Sat night Residency at Reflex , Nottinghams no.1 80's bar. I get to use a Kaleidovision VJ system as well as my own CD Decks as usual. Mixing 80's pop provides a decent challenge and i'm about the only DJ in the Reflex / Flares Nottingham setup that does this! Respect to DJ Jimmy who was my resident partner in crime and also shared the same vision with the music. Slots in Flares as and when needed have been done.
2003 I have resumed my residency at Edwards and started a regular set at Arribas. I am looking to change my daytime career into a more media based field (radio, broadcast, audio hardware or software).
2002 Time away from the UK scene had given me time to think about the direction I wanted to take my DJ-ing. I vowed not to return to the club residency as this was too limited in the style of music I could play, as well as the crowd becoming more attitude driven.
Edwards was back in touch and I was able to take up a fortnightly slot at weekends. The music in Edwards is commercial with many new styles and promos thrown into the mix.
I still produce mix CDs for use in my own sets where a formula of tracks has been selected from live experiences. Post-production editing (where necessary) is carried out on a home PC using the same software as 4 years ago! (Soundforge and SAW32).
2001 Club residency still going strong, from the contacts built there I land a residency at the busy "Edwards" bar in the centre of Nottingham.
Late in the year I quit my residencies and go to Italy with my daytime career.
2000 UK Garage blows up big time and a summer holiday to Aiya Napa lets me experience the full Garage explosion. On this same holiday, legendary Jeremy Healy plays a set at the Castle Club which shows that house music is far from dead, Trance music is also going very strong and the resident DJ Surge sparks off an interest to get hold of some of the tracks he played. Started residency at Zanadus nightclub (St. James Street, Nottingham).
1999 Began my first Club residence in for the Nottingham Trent University radio station. The play list was cool, funky house grooves, but this soon changed to R'n'B/Soul.
With pirate stations playing Underground UK Garage [“???” 96FM] I soon became interested and began including this in the nights music Programme.
1998 Now working in my first daytime career I met a commercial DJ with which I began touring commercial clubs around the midlands as support for mix-sections.
This took me to Manchester, Sheffield, Leicester, and Nottingham.
1997 Started performing live shows on Saturday evenings for the Nottingham Trent University radio station. The stations dance programme which later received an award from BBC Radio 1.
I got my own show on a Sunday evening, entitled "Boogie Nights" which allowed me to choose a mix of late 80s/early 90s disco tracks, mostly influenced by the movie of the same name.
Now experimenting with sequencing mixes using home PC and sampling/sequencing software.
1996 Still at University I bought my first Technics SL1210MK2 deck. After adjusting to the Direct Drive mechanism I was hooked, I had to buy another!
1995 By now I was mixing from CD to vinyl and vice versa. At this point my main influences were Jeremy Healy, Jon Pleased, BT, and Paul Oakenfold.
Started performing at friends’ parties, mostly getting paid in cans of beer!
1994 Bought my first Record Deck, a SoundLab belt-drive. In hindsight belt-drive turntables are very hard to use for beat-matching and require a VERY gentle touch which can be fu**ing frustrating!
1993 Taught myself some basic "beat-matching" by cueing up tracks of similar tempo and perfecting a much practised sequence. Also, started using Pro-Tracker on an Amiga 500 computer to sequence my own tracks and remixes.
1992 Got my first pair of decks (actually two standard CD players wired into that cheap mixer again).
1990 Became involved in a pirate station producing pre-recorded shows using a combination of hi-fi units and the cheapest mixer available.
1989 First became interested in DJ-ing after hearing local pirate stations [Rave FM 107.7] playing underground rave music.
